Ohio may not be the first place you think of when planning a weekend on the slopes. But Ohioans know where to go when they crave powder, and oftentimes it’s not too far from major cities like Cleveland and Toledo. While you won’t find the vertical drops of a Colorado mountain or the average annual snowfalls of a New Hampshire ski destination, Ohio ski resorts offer wide slopes and a family-friendly atmosphere.
What’s more, those who look to this Midwestern state for skiing and snowboarding likely won’t have to contend with the large crowds found at more recognized ski destinations. And if you’re worried about the quality of the powder, rest assured that the northern part of the state (where the ski resorts are located) sees up to 68 inches of snow on average. Plus, most skiable acres have snowmaking coverage.

Since it first opened in 1962, Mad River Mountain has been Ohio’s go-to ski destination for beginners. Over the course of the resort’s history, Mad River Mountain ski instructors have taught more than a million people how to ski. Mad River Mountain’s vertical drop of 300 feet and it’s wide, tree-lined runs make it an ideal setting for those still getting used to their skis. And plenty of snowmaking coverage ensures prime powder conditions all winter long, even in an absence of natural snowfall. Mad River Mountain is also home to a terrain park where budding snowboarders can practice their skills, with or without help from trained instructors.

Ohio’s first ski resort, Snow Trails has been welcoming skiers and boarders to its slopes since 1961. Located about halfway between Akron and Columbus, this ski destination defied all odds weather-wise. Before welcoming powderhounds, resort planners scrutinized area maps to determine the ideal location to accommodate snowmaking, and today Snow Trails visitors are still guaranteed prime conditions. The resort caters primarily to intermediate and expert skiers, although several bunny slopes are available for those still learning. Snow Trails also offers terrain parks and a large tubing hill.
