Stand at the summit of Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, New York, on a clear day and you can see all the way to Canada.
The fifth-largest mountain in New York also boasts 360-degree views of the Adirondacks and the most challenging ski slopes in the Northeast: the double-black diamond hike-to terrain known as “The Slides”.
Whiteface certainly provides a challenge for the expert riders, but that doesn’t mean that beginners can’t enjoy the resort. If you are just starting out, you will want to make your way to Bear Den Mountain, a separate area where the slopes are less extreme. Lessons are also provided on the mountain if you are looking to improve your skiing abilities.
Whiteface Mountain generally opens for operation around mid-November, and remains open until April. Be aware that the amount of snowfall is not guaranteed during the early and late season.
Ski-in/ski-out lodging is not available at Whiteface, but there is an abundance of places to stay nearby. Conveniently located at the base of Whiteface Mountain, The Inn at Whiteface , a charming bed and breakfast, provides free breakfast, discounted ski packages, and affordable room rates. With a hot tub, spectacular views of the mountain and access to cross-country ski trails, the Crowne Plaza Lake Placid resort is a great lodging option in the center of the village of Lake Placid , located just 35 minutes from the ski area. Whiteface Lodge Resort & Spa , roughly 40 minutes from the mountain, is great for families, boasting an ice skating rink, a movie theater, a bowling alley and a game room.
On-mountain dining is plentiful at Whiteface. Enjoy the delectable Whiteface Waffles in the Taste NY Cafe on the second floor of the Main Base Lodge. At the cafe you will also find locally made cheese, yogurt, pastries, snacks, and wine and beer. Enjoy a fancy meal at the J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines Cafe & Wine Bar at the Main Base Lodge for farm-to-table cuisine paired with award-winning wines. For burgers, grab-and-go deli sandwiches and salads, stop by Base Camp Market at the Main Base Lodge, or try the poutine, quesadillas, and wraps, make your way to Cloudspin Bar & Grill. Visit Growlers Grill or the Black Bear Cafe in the Bear Den Lodge for pub fare like wings, burgers, pizza and hot dogs.
There are three airports that surround Whiteface Mountain: Adirondack Regional Airport, Plattsburgh International Airport and Lake Placid Airport, all of which are within two hours of the ski resort. Once you reach the Adirondack region, you will need to rent a car to get around.
